Dress Remix

So ready to take a break from home improvement posts and see a fashion one? Too bad! No, I dressed up today just for you! Okay, maybe not just for you. Maybe it was because we had executives in the office and we needed to look like non-slackers. And wouldn't you know, today was the day my Elchim hair dryer bit the dust. Because I only own one hair dryer and don't have a backup, I have this nagging fear that my dryer will one morning just up and say, "Yo Thick Hair, it ain't happening no more!" That's exactly what my 13-month old dryer did (cause it can't quit at the 1 day before the 1 year-i'm-still-in-warranty mark). And of course, it had to quit as I was drying the last three sections of my hair. I know this isn't a feed-the-world hunger problem, but it's an issue that has to be addressed quickly as my hair still isn't long enough to look decent in a slicked back ponytail (although that doesn't stop me most mornings). But it's getting there. The choppy pieces from when my hair said, 'Yo (everything says 'yo' today in honor of Breaking Bad - gotta love me some Pinkman) you's ain't bleaching me no more" no longer stand at attention but do resemble the half and half Britney Spears look a few years when she combined extensions with 3" growth and everyone called her size 10 body "fat."

Soooo, wow, that was a lot of words. Since I don't have much new to show you and my dresses aren't just one trick ponies, let's do some comparisons to see how I mix up my existing wardrobe. I think y'all have asked for that anyway. So, yo, I'm just honorin' your requests.

The last time I wore this dress was about five months ago when I first started my current job, which is great btw. I work from home on Wednesdays, I do some travel, and most importantly, I'm treated like an adult who doesn't have to complete status reports EVER. This dress is pretty versatile in that it can be worn with just about any color shoe and accessory. But I do recommend a pointy-toe shoe with a fit and flare dress. Makes legs look shapely.

Here's The Limited dress five months ago:

We're still in the heat of summer (we were in the pool floating around on loungers on Saturday) so no fall clothing for me for about another 4-6 weeks. It's still 90+ and dreadfully hot here with afternoon rains. In fact it's been raining for three solid days now and a jacket wasn't necessary, even though I'm not a fan of showing my arms since I carry weight in them. But then again, don't most of us?

It used to be that you could count on a cool down the first week of October. Not anymore. That doesn't happen until either late October or into November and it could be a brief couple of days and then right back up to high 80s again until December. Speaking of December, as I was painting around the top perimeter of the kitchen on Sunday, I was singing Christmas carols in my head. Why? Yo, I don't know!

I have a couple more items to finish up in the kitchen and then I'll give you the grand reveal. I'm waiting on some 1 3/4" screws to come in the mail (yeah, not a Home Depot regular product - 2" or 1 1/2") to finish the pulls on the drawers. And I am working on a window valance this week. Glued, not sewed. I ain't Suzie Homemaker. Although I wouldn't mind a sewing machine one day so I can make something (hopefully) better than the crap they have in stores these days. Really over the cheap quality of fast fashion.

So speaking of our kitchen, I posted pictures of our nook last week. Well, it's changed! Sometimes you add an element, in this case the pot rack, and the other elements just seem out of place. Both hubby and I took a look at it and both agreed that the shelving and everything on it had to go. Especially since we got a new dining set (more on that in another post). So we took it all down and went back to my original vision of minimalism in both colors and theme.

Here's what's new: curtains and tiebacks (I spray painted them flat black) from, 2x3 rug from, oversized fork and spoon from Target.

3.1 Phillip Lim for Tarjay

Did the 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target collection happen quietly or have I just been under a house/home improvement rock for the last couple of months? I got an email about it a couple of days ago on launch date but hadn't heard anything prior. But then again, I have about 10 fashion magazines that I need to catch up on and I'm sure it was advertised in one of them. I'm thinking this weekend might be perfect for catching up on fashion. Well, then again, I'm going to make my Parisian kitchen valance this weekend. I'm really excited about how the kitchen is coming together but that's another post. Not quite ready for that reveal. But stay tuned. I'm hoping to show you it next week before I move on to the foyer. Or maybe the half bath. It's a toss up.

So only two pieces caught my eye in his collection. And I adore the 3.1 Phillip Lim line. Although I have no idea what the 3.1 stands for. Just say "Phillip Lim" cause the 3.1 is stupid. I stalked the sweatshirt wrap skirt for eons to no avail in bigger sizes. I think his line, like many other high end designers, only goes up to an 8 or 10. I'm too curvy and squatty to ever see those sizes again. His line for Target goes up to size 16. I was too late to the ball with this collection to snap up the faux leather black dress. Waah! It's cute, darn it. Snookie wahhh!

The other piece that caught my eye was the sleeveless, black jewel collard peplum. It zips up the front! I love me some peplum and he did me proud with this piece. Very nice fit. The peplum isn't too short and the material is a stretchy cotton, similar to Banana Republic's button down shirts for women. I didn't purchase it online but ended up snapping it up in Target today when I was returning a mirror for a project gone wrong. Never try to take a red, plastic mirror frame and spray paint it white. It becomes a pink disaster. I'm on my second can of spray paint and it just wasn't worth the money spent. So I took one of them back and will use the other one most likely as a vanity mirror once I work my way upstairs with the home improvements.

So here's the lucky bastard that came home with me today. Who's a cute peplum? You are!

Good Closet

You would think with four bedrooms, there'd be enough closet space for everything. There is! I'm happy with my closet. Just need to purchase a dresser or Ikea wardrobe so I have shelving. For now we're using our Ikea Expedit and some bins on our glass shelving, which is what we did in Connecticut as we don't have a proper dresser to hold all our folded crap.

There are two walk-in closets in the master bedroom. I chose the bigger one this time. At the apartment, I gave the bigger closet to hubby. Hubby's closet is fine except that there's attic access in his and the framing was just barely hanging on. So a portion of the attic is exposed (it's also where the second A/C unit is) and hot air is blowing into his closet. Until he reattaches the framing, he's using closets in the other two bedrooms. I'm also using another closet as well for my blazers and long jackets. The "teal" room has become my office (hubby's is downstairs). I've got a little setup that's working for now so that I can work from home 1-2 days/week depending on my workload, which is pretty heavy at the moment. My office is far from being done, though. But I do have an amazing view overlooking the pool and golf course. Not a bad way to spend a day at the office.

What my closet lacks in shelving, it more than makes up for in hanging quadrants. I think this is the biggest closet I've ever had and I'm quite pleased. I still have some room for more clothes. How sad. NOT! What is sad is the 10lbs of stress weigh I put on over the summer that I need to work on getting off. But I haven't really had a moment to just breathe. Today was the first day I actually sat down at lunchtime and addressed my Sasquatch eyebrows and gave myself a pedicure. Personal grooming has taken a backseat to the move/unpacking/painting/work.
