Unexpected Combo

Why do people have to say such mean things via the Internet? I don't get a lot of mean comments and I know I put myself out there and am exposed and vulnerable. I don't know the people that comment, just like I don't know you, but I've developed a sense of who some of you are and I enjoy our short conversations through my blog. However, the following comment via Pinterest about this outfit just unnerved me today.

"That looks like fashion at 60..... I am 42 and i would not wear grandma clothes like that."

I don't pretend to think that every outfit I feature is a "hit." Far from it. I feature real clothes that people can afford and I try to think a little outside the box to come up with some unusual combinations. And I've explained this before. I'm a small-time blogger just showing you what I wear to work each day. And I like to change up my hair!

And that's what I did with this outfit. I used my Closet app the other night and it featured white pants with this blouse that I've worn with red, black, and denim. I never would have thought to pair this blouse with white. It's a different combination. I'm not crazy about the flare of the pants (and they are a size too big), but the point is to give you a sense of possibilities. You might say, "Hey, I like the leopard and stripes and I think I might try that next." Clothes are supposed to be fun. It's one thing you can change on a daily basis with little commitment.

  1. Oh I feel your pain. I've had my share of mean spirited comments and I just don't understand why people get satisfaction from it. Keep your chin up and remember you have lots of us who enjoy your perspective.

    1. Thank you! Absolutely. I agree, it was a different type of outfit. Not everyone's taste. Certainly understandable. The comment was just rude and unnecessary. It served no valuable purpose as it wasn't constructive. Another pinner said the fit could be better and she would have tucked in the tunic. Great! That's constructive and useful!

  3. I love Granny chic, but this isn't Granny. You look super cute. I agree that the pants aren't the best choice to show off the star pieces -- your hair, jacket shoes. But whatev. If someone can't take what they like and leave the rest, fuggedabout 'em. I know some days it's just hard to shake off, but y, shake it off. Now let's talk about what's really important. You scored those shoes!!!??? Lucky!

  4. This is a super stylish, I love, love it! Really elegant.

I am very sorry you had this rude comment. Unfortunately I have heard about similar comments towards fellow bloggers of my age group recently. We all appreciate honest feedback but insults are just a no-go and very bad behaviour.

Keep on with your great blog. Your personal stories and maintaining your own "real" style is your USP!

  5. WAAAAAHHHHHTTTT??? I loved that outfit! Polka dots! Blue! Cardigans! What's not to love? I actually turned around and wore a 3/4 cardi over one of my blythe blouses within the next few days. Please don't let it get you down. I know it won't stop you. :) I appreciate honesty as much as the next person, but mean-spirited unsolicited comments to a stranger are not honesty. Crazy. Some folks are just mean... maybe even jealous. It's not worth your time to worry about it. Keep showing us these awesome outfits instead!

  6. I'm 42 and would wear the shit out of that polka dot shirt and necklace! In fact, I just tried the necklace under the collar/over the buttons ala J Crew for the first time yesterday and loved it. And I wore a granny friendly long pencil skirt that covered my knee. I'm sure people thought it was a bit much. But I was happy! And as long as you are happy, rock on.

PS. love your (not) granny inspired long leopard coat today too!!

  8. Grandma? You? Oh, come on. The person who wrote this is obviously suffering a Pamprin moment, and they are taking it out on you.

That said, you are great blogger. I enjoy your commentary on fashion and your life. Your outfit choices are fun, and I like that as well. I think if we lived in the same part of the country, you and I would be shopping buds....and do some damage. =) Maybe, it's a good thing we live far apart? lol

I'm completely on board with Meghan's comments...."keep showing us these awesome outfits instead!"

P.S. FYI. When I'm in town, reading your blog is part of my morning routine!

  9. Those rude comments serve to make an insecure person feel better about themselves, and they feel safe saying them on the anonymous internet. Just consider the pathetic source and continue to do your own thing. I enjoy all the fashion blogs, including yours, with all the hits and misses, that's how we learn what works and what doesn't. It's called development and you just do yours publicly (and thank you by the way). The mean commenters need to learn that if you can't say anything nice, no one wants to hear your crap anyway. I like your outfits, keep up the good work and I'll be out here watching and enjoying. Gerrilyn

    1. Thank you, Keri! Yes, blouses and dresses have been fine. I find their sizes to run a bit big. My mom found the skirt she ordered to run TTS. Shoes are cheap. Pants are unlined but cute and unique. They fit big at the waist. Skirts are great!

  12. I'm with Keri. Mean People Suck. I would have NEVER tried print pants if you hadn't inspired me. My husband can't stop talking about them and people have stopped me and told me how great I look. Because of YOU! You rock and the haters are gonna hate.

  13. I triple what Keri said....there is no cause to be hurtful. It is bad enough that women judge each other in our minds, there is no need to pollute the air with such negativity. For the record, I think it's a chic and unexpected combo, and she probably tries to dress like her teenage daughter. Oops, said too much.

    1. Lol! I'm sorry, that hit close to home. My boss (older than me) likes boy bands like Wand Erection. I mean, One Direction. Lol!
