Thrifty Plaid

Hubby and I took these photos about 30 minutes before the sun finally came out after two weeks of dreary, rainy weather sprinkled with 1.5 days of scattered sunshine. Hubby hates snow, I hate rain. Hate is such a strong word. Let me see if there's another word I can substitute. Nope. I hate rain.

I bought these plaid Michael Kors pants at Savers thrift store a few weeks ago. I had to have them hemmed but otherwise they are in pretty good shape. I knew the sun was coming out and wanted to brighten up my wardrobe a bit with some color so I grabbed my TJ Maxx Franco Sarto shoes and paired the pants with a J. Crew tee.

I'm finding that since the layoffs last week, I'm having to rethink a lot of my clothing options. I'm torn because I have some great items I want to show you all but now that we are such a small group at work, some of these items seem too dressy for an office environment with only two other women. And most everyone wears jeans and polos. I feel like I'm the only one that cares about her appearance and bothers to think about my daily wardrobe. I would love to work for a large company again where I don't stand out in my clothing choices.

  1. Hi, Niki, I love this outfit! I've been hanging around for a few weeks (found you through J's Everyday Fashion; I especially loved A L'Orange week -- my favorite color). Such a bummer about the radical shift for your company. But I kind of wanted to encourage you to hang in there. I worked at a company where I dressed by far the nicest and it made a huge difference in the connections I made and how seriously people took me, even though I was the least important person present. I totally get where you're coming from, but if you don't expect them to suddenly start wearing designer duds then they shouldn't expect you to wear jeans and polos (which, by the way, is just sad, sad, sad). Hang in there!! -- Cindy

    1. Thank you Cindy! Glad you found me and welcome! I appreciate your comment and you make an excellent point. I have no problem with jeans (in fact Monday starts jeans theme week) but I've been down this road before with another small company. When I dress casual all the time at work I feel sloppy and less productive. So I'll take your advice and hang in there and keep wearing nice clothes and blogging about it.
      Thanks!

  2. Hi, Niki,

I love this outfit; it has to be one of my favorites!

I agree with Cindy; hang in there! I think it's best to be known as the one who dresses a notch or two higher than the others. You have great personal style and seem to have so much fun playing with clothes. I always look to your for some fresh inspiration.

  3. Hi Niki....

I have finally gotten my new blog off the ground. Right now I am calling it 'Dangerous Curves', but that may change. I started it a long time ago, but being a graduate student, never had the time to really get it going. I plan to post some of my own outfits soon. I would love it if you would take a look at my blog and consider following!

Please take a look at waltzerl@blogsopt.com

    1. You've got a good eye for fashion, Lisa! I like how you put outfits together. Would love to see some of them on you in pics. That would probably drive more traffic. I especially like the little polyvore icons you can click at the bottom of each outfit. Very cool!

  5. Love this outfit, and those orange sandals are to die for. I agree with the other commenters. Keep being you and dressing how you feel most comfortable. I generally dress up at work although we have a business casual dress code but I'm also dressing up more on the weekends. I wore a skirt and T yesterday with some new sandals and DH wanted to know why I was so dressed up. I told him it's because I have all of these cute outfits that I like to wear and it makes me feel good. I'm almost always overdressed, but not in a bad way, meaning I don't wear an LBD and pearls everywhere, but I see nothing wrong with wearing cute skirts and dressing up my jeans.

    1. Hee hee - LBD and pearls. I've actually become the opposite on weekends. Since I dress up during the week, I like to chill in grubby clothes on the weekends (it also gives my overprocessed hair a bit of a break, too). Hopefully I don't have any followers that live in Milford, CT where I typically shop on the weekends. They're in for quite a shock if they ever spot me out and about on weekends sans makeup, hair pulled back or in a hat, etc. There's no glamour when you're buying mulch at Lowe's and grocery shopping. But if hubby and I are going out to dinner, I'll absolutely dress up.

  6. Such a cute outfit, Niki. Love how you styled the shoes in a completely different way from the pretty ON dress look. I agree with pps- keep your own style at work, no need to slide into the jeans/polo routine.:)
