Need some time...

Yesterday was a terrible day as there are only nine people out of 23 that are left at the accounting software firm I work at. Massive layoffs. I was one of the lucky ones who still has my job but it's forcing me to think about what's truly important in my life right now. I have an income but am I on a sinking ship like I was in 2002 when I was part of a third round of layoffs at Arthur Andersen? 85,000 people lost their jobs during the Enron scandal, including me. I worked at the software development division of Arthur Andersen in Sarasota, FL - far from the Houston office where the shredding took place.

I'm filled with emotions right now. So sorry to see the people I've worked with for four years just tossed aside. So happy to still have a job. Worried how this small company will make it with such a small core of employees. So until I can wrap my head around this, I just need a little bit of time to deal with this unexpected turn of events. Please don't go anywhere. I will be back with more outfits and my usual happy self. Just give me a few days to "gather" as Kate Winslet said on Oscar night.

  1. Sorry to hear about this. That is tough. I hope that your company is able to do well even with less employees and that you keep your job!

    1. Thank you, Sylvia. It's very somber here today. Not sure what our direction is at this point. I, too, hope things turn around.

  2. I sympathize. It has happened to me four times now and I am only 47. I have had to re-invent myself and start over repeatedly. It sucks...I know, but this is the new world order...unstable chaos. You will be ok, once you accept that you must rely upon yourself and not employers. I work as an independent consultant now. Best of luck.

    1. ahhh if only blogging paid I would do this all day long. well, it pays a small amount with the other site I write for and I'm glad to have that opportunity. but I think I'll start checking out some other possibilities just so I don't put all my eggs in this basket.

  3. So sorry to hear about this! My company has been limping along for years and that limp gets bigger each year. I don't expect to be employed here forever, that's for sure. And I worry because I'm 48 and the thought of starting over at, say, 50 gives me the vapors. That will be just around the time that my older son will be entering college. For now, I'm content to go down with this ship. I keep hoping that the economy will be stronger by the time we do sink. Anyway, I'm sure you'll be dealing with shock and your own version of survivor's guilt for the next few days so take as much time as you need. But not too much because as you know, I love your blog!

    1. Thank you, Kathy! It's so nice to have readers like you that love reading my blog and find what I have to say and show interesting. So thank you!
I will be doing the same - limping along with this company until something better presents itself. Maybe they can turn it around, but who knows. I thought the economy was improving and things were looking up, but I guess I was just in a bubble here when the CFO would say 'we're cash positive and conservative in our expenses.' I have some posts in the works and will return later this week.

  4. We will miss your posts Niki but of course understand and will be sending good vibes your way. It's tough being one of the survivors with the same workload but on the flip side lucky to have been saved...been there too. Tomorrow will be a sunny day!!! Cheering for you. Renee :)

    1. Thank you Renee. I won't be gone long and I have some posts in the works. I just need a little decompressing (translation: a couple of glasses of wine for a few nights, takeout, and a couple of days of the new norm at work.) I should have some stuff up on my blog later in the week.

  5. Oh Renee that's too funny that you remembered! Thank you. I did end up getting them. Wore them once and they are so uncomfortable and now I'm stuck with them. This is the 2nd pair of uncomfortable Aldo shoes I bought. But thank you! That brought a little chuckle to me! :-)

  6. Sorry Niki! I didn't understand the full situation. I'm glad you were able to keep your job, and I think it's always good to re-prioritize the important in life from time to time. xo

  7. No worries, Sam. I actually missed writing on my blog for a couple of days. Can't keep me away. Sometimes I crank out a couple of posts/day. Got a new laptop tonight because my other one was old and the wireless died. So hopefully I'll be able to take pics and post while in Austin the week after next.
